I have heard from many constituents who are concerned about the President unilaterally deciding to bomb Iran. While I recognize the danger Iran poses to the US and the necessity of preventing them from developing nuclear weapons, I am deeply concerned that President Trump completely circumvented Congress, endangered American servicemembers and diplomats in the region, and put our national security at risk.
We must not forget that it was Donald Trump himself who walked us to this very moment when he ripped up our long-term plans for diplomacy and withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal.
Congress and the administration must work together to keep the American people safe, de-escalate tensions, and seek peace wherever possible while supporting our ally, Israel.
This week, I joined two War Powers resolutions reaffirming that only Congress, as outlined in the Constitution, has the authority to declare war– while ensuring the U.S. retains the ability to defend itself from an imminent threat.
