Wildfire Season in Colorado

As Colorado enters another wildfire season, it is crucial to know the resources available to keep yourself, your family, and your community safe. Since 2015, the United States has experienced, on average, roughly 100 more large wildfires every year than the year before—and this wildfire season is already outpacing last year. Climate change is driving the devastating intersection of extreme heat, drought, and wildland fire danger across the United States.

To tackle some of these issues, I organized a Wildfire Advisory Council made up of community leaders and constituents most impacted by wildfires in Colorado’s 7th Congressional District. We are working together to improve forest management, find ways to prevent fires from spreading, and do everything we can to save lives and protect homes and businesses.

Whether you plan to hold backyard barbeques at home or travel around the state to go camping this summer, it is important to stay updated on local fire restrictions. The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control maintains a live look at local fire bans that you can access here. You can access the most up-to-date information on fire restrictions and bans from the County Sheriff, Fire Department, or land agency in which you live or are visiting.

Colorado home and vehicle owners can take a number of precautions to protect their home and property from wildfires during the summer:

I’m working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to protect our communities from wildfires and help impacted families recover. Some of my priorities include addressing the overgrowth of our forests which can strengthen wildfires and lead to more damage, engaging with FEMA and the Forest Service to deliver support after a fire occurs, and making sure our houses and businesses are structurally prepared to withstand wildfires.
